RAW and Slightly Confused

I'm in the mood to take some new pics. I'm currently familiarising myself with the settings and controls of my Nikon D80 before getting into action. I'm also trying to decide if I should shoot in RAW. How many togs on here shoot in RAW, either exclusively or to a large extent? What do you feel are the advantages in doing so and, is the quality really much better than the highest quality JPEG?

Any advice will be gratefully received.
